Schofield Pass earns its reputation through the Devil's Punchbowl — a notoriously narrow and exposed shelf road section with a waterfall-fed creek crossing at the bottom. The broader route between Crested Butte and Crystal Mill passes through gorgeous Elk Mountains terrain, but that one short section is responsible for most of the rescues. Know your rig dimensions, have a spotter for the Punchbowl, and don't rush it.
